The Amish in the American Imagination (Center Books in Anabaptist Studies)

Author: David Weaver-Zercher
Average review score:

A fascinating Anabaptist study
The Amish In The American Imagination by David Weaver-Zercher (Assistant Professor of American Religious History, Messiah College) is a fascinating Anabaptist study of how American twentieth-century culture perceives and interacts with America's Amish population and culture. The repercussions that Amish songs and Amish themed movies arising from the broader American popular culture have had upon Amish people, and vice versa, are discussed at length in this sober, thoughtful, scholarly, and carefully researched presentation. The Amish In The American Imagination is a highly recommended and original contribution to American Religious History Studies, American Popular Culture Studies, and 20th Century Amish Cultural Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

Antigua California: Mission and Colony on the Peninsula Frontier, 1697-1768 (University of Arizona Southwest Center Book)
Published in Hardcover by University of New Mexico Press (September, 2000)
Author: Harry W. Crosby
Average review score:

Definitive and Fascinating
When missionaries came to colonize California, it was to Baja California "Antigua California" that they came. This is the story of the Jesuits who persevered in a barren, waterless, resource poor place. But the really great thing about the book is that it is the whole story of the pioneer mission period: it is also the story of the aboriginal peoples who were the targets of the Jesuits, and of the people (mostly Mexican) whom the Jesuits hired and brought along to handle and create daily life-soldiers, sailors, artisans, laborers. For once, a comprehensive history truly is. Using original eighteenth century materials (church records, diaries, letters, reports) the author has tracked down the movement of individuals, their genealogies, their careers, their contributions. More than most, it is a book of portraits of real people, pieced together sympathetically from scattered and scanty records. For a scholar, the book is eminently useful: full of maps, chronological tables of people and places, explanations of systems and bureaucracies. For the history buff, it is a dream of readability and detail. Highly recommended.

Approaching the Center: Poems
Published in Paperback by New Issues Press (01 March, 2001)
Author: Myronn Hardy
Average review score:

Excellent Debut
"Approaching The Center" is perhaps one of the most interersting works I have read in quite some time. I have long been anticipating the release of this book of poems, which elaborates on Myronn E. Hardy's journeys through life. Some of the topics in the book range from adolescent experiences from the early 1980's in rural eastern and southern Arkansas to his experiences in South Africa, to a tribute to his father. However, this is only a sample of the vast number of ideas and experiences he has to share. An absolutely phenomenal work, that I shall be reading for many hours to come. Highly Recommended!

Congratulations, Myronn... on a job well done.

Are Our Kids All Right?: Answers to the Tough Questions About Child Care Today
Published in Hardcover by Petersons Guides (August, 1900)
Author: Susan B. Dynerman
Average review score:

Examines without bias
Finally a book that cuts through the bias surrounding discussions about childcare to give parents the straight facts. Too often the debate about appropriate care gets mired in discussion about morals and family values but the need for childcare --whatever our personal opinions are-- isn't going away; parents deserve the information in this book. For those actively searching for quality substitute care, the second-half of the book contains valuable insight into what a good care situation looks like based on the research uncovered in the first half of the book. I strongly recommend this book to any parent considering using non-parental care or anyone interested in child advocacy issues.
